DMBP

CAS Registry Number 1068-27-5

What is it?

  • DMBP is a man-made chemical powder used by industry in the manufacture of rubber and plastics.

How is it used?

  • When it is heated, DMBP produces chemicals that can react to make rubber and plastics.
  • Based on the most recent data, DMBP is not manufactured in Canada.  It is, however, used in the production of many common items containing rubber and plastics that are currently in commerce in this country.

Why Did the Government of Canada Assess It?

  • The Government of Canada had a concern that DMBP may have been "toxic" to the environment as defined under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999.
  • DMBP can get into the environment when waste materials from making rubber and plastics are washed down the drain or when containers that held DMBP are rinsed.
  • DMBP can build up in the bodies of animals, but it does not stay in the environment for a long time, and small amounts of DMBP are not likely to harm animals or plants that live in the water.
  • DMBP was assessed by Government of Canada scientists to help decide what further actions may be necessary to ensure that the health of Canadians and their environment are protected.

What Is the Government of Canada Doing?

  • The Government of Canada has determined that DMBP is not "toxic" as defined under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999.
  • No further action will be taken on DMBP.
