Adding Substances to Schedule 1 of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act

Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) was determined to meet one or more of the criteria in section 64 of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA 1999) and therefore was proposed to be added to Schedule 1.

Final Screening Assessment and Proposed Risk Management Approach

The final screening assessment concludes that:

  • HBCD meets one or more of the criteria set out in section 64 of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA 1999);
  • HBCD meets the criteria for persistence and bioaccumulation potential out in the Persistence and Bioaccumulation Regulations.

This document builds on the previously released risk management scope document, and outlines, in more depth, the risk management actions for this substance, including the choice of risk management instruments. There is a 60-day public comment period on the proposed risk management approach document, from November 12, 2011 to January 11, 2012. Draft Screening Assessment and Risk Management Scope

A risk management scope document was also released on this date.
